April is Alcohol Awareness Month
April 23rd, 2009
Alcohol abuse is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. In 2005, excessive alcohol consumption was responsible for 79,000 deaths, 1.6 million hospitalizations, and over 4 million emergency room visits for alcohol-related conditions. 15% of adults report alcohol use that is consistent with binge drinking.
In observance of Alcohol Awareness Month, you can help reduce the incidence of alcohol-attributable illness and death, especially among youth.
Put your advocacy into action by doing the following:
Contact your legislator and advocate to increase the cost of alcoholic beverages by increasing the federal excise tax on alcohol.
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to express the value of clinical and community preventive services.
Make a donation that may save life.
