How can I work with School Health Connection to get a School-Based Health Center on my campus?

SHC has two ways of helping schools: 1) by providing technical assistance to identify possibilities to provide health services in schools, and; 2) by providing financial grants for facilities and/or start-up.

What is School Health Connections Role after start-up?

SHC represents a forum where all SBHCs in Greater New Orleans can work together to ensure long-term sustainability of their clinics, improve community relations, and increase quality of care given to students.

Are other services besides School-Based Health Centers funded?

Yes, other health-related services besides SBHCs are funded by School Health Connection as long as it accomplishes one of the other main objectives of establishing healthy school environments or improving behavioral health services in schools. For instance, School Health Connection is currently funding vision services and behavioral health services in schools.

How are funding decisions made?

After having preliminary discussions with a school, SHC assesses schools being considered for a comprehensive SBHC using a scoring system that covers four main areas: 1) student population; 2) interest from school community; 3) financial resources available, and 4) needs of surrounding community. SHC uses a scoring system that was agreed upon by its Steering Committee and only schools that meet a minimum standard will be considered.

Thank you for your interest in promoting healthy schools in the Greater New Orleans area. If you are interested in pursuing a partnership to establish a SHBC or provide other health services in schools, please contact shc@lphi.org or call (504) 301-9844 to obtain more information or begin preliminary discussions.
