New Orleans School Lunch Consumption Report Released

Results from a lunch consumption study conducted as part of the Healthy School Food Collaborative (HSFC) evaluation in partnership with Propeller were recently published in the Journal of School Health.

The article, "School Lunch Consumption Among 3 Food Service Providers in New Orleans", reports findings from an 8‐week plate waste study. LPHI examined the amount of waste from 18,070 trays of food among fourth and fifth graders at seven New Orleans schools, three of which were part of the HSFC. A key finding was that regardless of whether the school served "healthier" food options, on average students consumed less then 60% of the recommended calories for school lunch. Interventions to increase school lunch consumption are recommended.
