The Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI), founded in 1997, is a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit and public health institute that translates evidence into strategy to optimize health ecosystems. LPHI’s strategies span a broad continuum of efforts that seek to address the social determinants of health in communities and enhance health care systems to improve health outcomes. LPHI prioritizes prevention, partnerships with multiple sectors, increased access to quality, integrated care and social services, and solutions that influence decision makers and policies that drive progress toward equity locally and nationally.

The communications team at LPHI plays a strategic role – in relationship with staff, partners and community – to articulate conditions that create health throughout Louisiana. The team also drives communications approaches that articulate LPHI’s strategic value to system partners and to the public.

Position Summary­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­

The Communications and Earned Media Manager will be responsible for playing an integral role in managing and advancing LPHI’s communications goals, by collaborating with staff throughout LPHI and external partners to develop holistic communications efforts to promote LPHI work and accomplishments to stakeholders and community utilizing diverse and innovative strategies. Strong comprehensive communications strategy design, excellent writing skills, implementation experience, earned media (PR) and social media experience and project management are required to support LPHI communications initiatives. The ideal candidate will have experience in a health-related communications field and have an understanding of the latest strategies and messaging for communications efforts within a public health setting. They will also have established relationships with area media outlets. Occasional travel required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field required or equivalent experience, in public health, health communications or non- profit environments; Master’s degree preferred
  • 4+ years’ experience in development and management of communications strategies, following the latest and best practices in the field and including tactics such as earned media, digital, social media, blog and content marketing
  • Experience in health communications and advocacy campaigns preferred
  • Experience in day-to-day contract and vendor/agency management and communications budget management
  • Experience with directing website strategy and design, including back end understanding and maintenance
  • Meltwater/ PR software experience preferred
  • Established relationships with area news publications and/or reporters preferred
  • Experience working with a “social marketing” methodology preferred
  • Experience meeting and networking with partners preferred

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with division leads to develop and implement individual, innovative, well-researched communications strategies to meet division goals
  • Synthesizes evidence and past program experience to develop strategy and business case for future resources
  • Assist in overarching organization communications planning and implementation while ensuring strategy and content is in alignment with individual division strategies
  • Curate, draft, edit and proof copy for materials, such as collaterals and educational materials, publications, website and social media, blog posts, e-letters, etc.
  • Coordinate with Communications Manager to develop and implement strategies on shared projects to ensure alignment
  • Develop and lead trainings to internal staff around communications processes as needed 

Public Relations

  • Develop, implement and evaluate media outreach and advocacy strategies to garner public support for public health policy and healthy behaviors
  • Identify and initiate opportunities that positively represents LPHI and its initiatives in the community to position the organization as a thought leader and go-to resource for health-related issues
  • Develop media materials such as media alerts, press releases, talking points for staff and key media spokespersons including media interview prep sessions and media trainings
  • Respond to requests for information and facilitate interviews with LPHI spokespeople and media
  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of the media
  • Conduct media pitch calls to frame story angles and secure interview/media coverage opportunities
  • Develop targeted media lists and disseminate information through PR software (Meltwater)

Social Media and Digital

  • Develop, implement, manage, evaluate and report on comprehensive social media campaigns including analytics reporting
  • Work with internal staff to draft blog articles and coordinate scheduling of blog posts
  • Provide direction on website development, design and content structure

Administrative 

  • Maintain regular and ongoing communication with Leadership, Support Staff, Regional Staff, LPHI support divisions and partners to ensure all communications strategies are collaborative and holistic
  • Manage vendor contracts and invoicing to ensure deliverables are met and within budget

Director Support 

  • Manage vendors and contracts as needed to ensure deliverables are met
  • Assist supervisor in crafting and reviewing vendor contracts as needed
  • Assist supervisor in developing proposals and RFPs

Perform other duties as assigned
