The Opportunity  

The Louisiana Public Health Institute administers tobacco control and prevention programming focused on improving the health of Louisianans by reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke through community capacity-building, promoting cessation services, policy, and advocacy, and identifying and eliminating tobacco-related disparities. A significant portion of this programming consists of the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL), which began in 2003. It is an evidence-based, statewide, comprehensive tobacco control and prevention program funded by the state’s tobacco excise tax through a contract (of roughly $4.7M) with the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium (LCRC). The TFL program is guided and advised by the TFL Steering Committee and Advisory Board.

The TFL Epidemiology and Evaluation (E&E) Fellowship is designed to aid a graduate student in public health, social sciences, public policy, or other related areas of study by providing experiential learning for students interested in epidemiology, biostatistics, or evaluation, via a health equity lens, within TFL’s health promotion activities. One TFL E&E Fellowship opportunity is being extended, and the candidate selected will:

  • Be supervised by the TFL Director or LPHI’s Senior Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Manager
  • Receive guidance, coaching, and mentorship from TFL Director and other leaders within TFL/LPHI
  • Support (and grow to coordinate) epidemiological, biostatistical, or evaluation tasks and assignments specific to TFL deliverables
  • Work 15 – 25 hours per week
  • Have access to professional development opportunities
  • Build professional capacity and relationships with internal and external public health professionals and leaders

This paid, part-time, non-benefit eligible position will begin January/Spring 2023 and end upon the student’s graduation from their program. The candidate is expected to work between 15-25 hours per week.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will commence remotely; therefore, ideal candidates should have the ability to telework; however, they will be asked to come to LPHI’s office and attend work-related activities occasionally.


  • Current graduate student in the field of public health, health science, public administration, public policy, education, or a closely related field required
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the previously mentioned fields
  • Relevant or applicable health promotion experience
  • Ability to demonstrate effective professional and interpersonal relationship experiences and principles.
  • Knowledge of public health and social issues in Louisiana or southern states
  • Strong commitment to LPHI’s mission and values and to centering diversity, equity, and inclusion in executing key responsibilities.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Program Coordination

  • Support the coordination and monitoring of TFL’s data and evaluation activities
  • Work with TFL’s Policy, System, & Environmental Doctoral Fellow
  • Support the development of reports, journal articles, and factsheets

Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Support the identification of writing collaboration/opportunities with stakeholders
  • Quality improvement monitoring of the TFL Contact Hub

Document and Support Best Practices

  • Research, identify and report on epidemiological, biostatistical, and evaluation best practices that aid TFL in more equitably achieving its five goals

Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Experience in data entry, management, and cleaning
  • Working knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data collection tools (surveys, interview guides, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of REDCap for creating and managing online surveys and databases


  • Hourly pay – potential to earn $16,000 annually (first year); $12/hour
