This position is assigned to the Center for Community and Preventive Health in the Office of Public Health (OPH) and will serve as the lead Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review (PAMR) epidemiologist. This position will assist with monitoring and evaluating proposed grant strategies and activities and support the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative (PQC).  As such, this position will serve as a bridge between initiatives by tracking both mortality cases and severe maternal morbidity.

  • Coordinates the overall collection of Louisiana PAMR and PQC data. Duties include ensuring data are abstracted and entered into electronic systems in a timely manner, performing or overseeing some data entry, performing data editing, analyses, evaluation and data requests.
  • Responsible for the analysis and dissemination of Louisiana PAMR and PQC data, including all quantitative and qualitative data analysis for the creation of the annual PAMR Report.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field plus one year of professional level experience in epidemiology.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, especially oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to enter data accurately into computer programs
  • Ability to use computers and applications (including Microsoft Office products).
  • Intermediate SAS preferred with minimum 9 credit hours in epidemiology and/or biostatistics
  • Prior experience with MCH and/or surveillance operations preferred

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews all data that are entered by the MCH Coordinators into the MMRIA database
  • Reviews and enters all data from committee decisions forms into MMRIA database after a PAMR review meeting, including committee recommendations
  • Participates in case review meetings and assists in recommendation facilitation
  • Participates in the preparation of case narratives and materials, including socio-spatial analyses
  • Examines linkages with Vital Records and other data sources on a regular basis to resolve any systematic case identification errors
  • Validates and documents the completion of quality assurance checks in MMRIA
  • Conducts quarterly Louisiana Hospital Inpatient Discharge Database (LAHIDD) data pulls for Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) and mortality
  • Reports on SMM and LaPQC process measures to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM)
  • Conducts Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) on LaPQC reporting and MMRIA data
  • Tracks trends in assignment of cause of death and develops strategies to meaningfully share that information with relevant stakeholders
  • Analyzes cause of death assigned in Vital Records data and compares to results from the case review process to better understand trends in maternal mortality
  • Analyzes MMRIA data for trends and distribution of cases
  • Analyzes trends in maternal mortality data and outlines in PAMR reports and annual briefs provided to the Governor’s Office, the State Legislature and stakeholders. This position serves as the primary analytic point of contact for data requests related to maternal mortality and the generation of the annual PAMR report.
  • Manages evaluation and performance measurement for ERASE MM grant activities
  • Reports maternal mortality rates and monitors regional, state, and national trends to identify changes in Louisiana’s maternal mortality rate
  • Participates in CDC Maternal Mortality Workgroups
  • Works as part of the Data to Action Team to support analytic needs of BFH


  • Salary range is $44,845 - $55,989 and commensurate with experience and education.
